Background
I witnessed something no person should ever have to see: a farmer’s child dying a slow death because of the chemicals and conditions surrounding an industry that millions of people depend on every day. That moment changed the way I looked at coffee forever.
Behind every cup of coffee are millions of farming families. Coffee supports an estimated 20–25 million farming households worldwide, with more than 100 million people connected to coffee production and processing. Nearly three-quarters of the world’s coffee comes from smallholder farms, many in regions where poverty, limited healthcare, and restricted access to education remain everyday realities.
The reality is that many children growing up on coffee farms inherit the same struggles as previous generations. Globally, 160 million children are estimated to be involved in child labor, with agriculture representing the majority of these cases. In coffee-producing communities, poverty and lack of educational access can force families into impossible choices where survival comes before schooling.
Specialty coffee is not automatically more ethical than commercial coffee. A higher price tag or smaller production scale does not guarantee better conditions. The same challenges can exist throughout the supply chain.
That is why we chose a different path. We only use organic products in our lineup, prioritize the most sustainable shipping methods available, and focus on creating a positive impact beyond the cup. Every cup plants a tree. Through this commitment, we have helped protect and restore rainforest ecosystems while preserving several acres of land.
Coffee should never cost a child their health, their education, or their future. Every cup should represent responsibility, regeneration, and hope.
The impact of conventional coffee production reaches far beyond the coffee plant itself. The chemicals used in agriculture — including pesticides, herbicides, and other synthetic inputs — do not simply disappear after they are sprayed. They can move through soil, waterways, and surrounding ecosystems, affecting biodiversity, wildlife, local communities, and the long-term health of the land.
For many coffee-growing regions, this issue is especially urgent because coffee farms are often located in or near some of the world’s most important rainforest ecosystems. These forests are home to countless species, protect watersheds, store carbon, regulate climate, and support the livelihoods of millions of people. When forests are cleared, soils are depleted, or chemicals enter fragile ecosystems, the damage extends far beyond the boundaries of a single farm.
The people closest to this reality are the farmers and families who work these lands every day. Millions of agricultural workers around the world face exposure to pesticides, often with limited access to protective equipment, healthcare, or education. Children growing up in farming communities can be exposed simply by living near treated fields, playing in agricultural areas, or sharing environments with family members who work around these chemicals.
Research has raised concerns about long-term occupational exposure to certain agricultural chemicals, including glyphosate-based herbicides, and potential associations with health risks such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma. While scientific research continues to examine the full scope of these impacts, the responsibility to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure and protect farming communities is clear.
The environmental cost does not end at the farm. The coffee supply chain itself has an impact on the planet. From transportation emissions to land use, every step matters. That is why we believe sustainability must include not only how coffee is grown, but how it moves around the world.
This is why we have committed to building a different kind of coffee company.
We prioritize organic products throughout our lineup and choose practices designed to protect farmers, consumers, and the ecosystems that make coffee possible. We ship using the most sustainable methods available, utilizing sailing vessels, solar-powered ships, and low-impact maritime transport wherever possible. When coffee and products reach closer to their destination, we prioritize electric rail, electric vehicles, and other lower-emission transportation solutions for the final stages of delivery.
Every decision matters because sustainability is not one action — it is the combination of every choice made along the journey.
Specialty coffee is not automatically sustainable or ethical simply because it is produced on a smaller scale. The same challenges can exist throughout the supply chain. True sustainability requires protecting the people who grow coffee, the forests surrounding coffee farms, and the future generations who depend on these environments.
That is why every cup with us is not only compostable but also plants a tree. Through this commitment, we have helped restore ecosystems, conserve rainforest, and protect several acres of land from further destruction.
We believe coffee should give back more than it takes. Every cup is an opportunity to support regeneration — restoring forests, protecting biodiversity, supporting responsible farming, and creating a healthier future for the communities behind every harvest.
